In the name of God Amen. The tenth day of December 1691 and in the third year of the reign of our sovereign Lord and Lady William and Mary by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King and Queen defenders of the faith I Henry Pottrell of Chrishall in the county of Essex yeoman being aged and infirm but of perfest memory and understanding thanks be given to God for the same and calling to mind the frailty of this mortal life do for the better quieting of my mind and settling things in order revoke and make void all Wills by me formerly made and do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following First I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God [Illegible] [Illegible] by and through the merits of Jesus christ my saviour and redeemer to be everlastingly saved and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor hereafter named Item I give and devise all that my freehold messuage or tenement in Chrishall aforesaid called Jarklins Withall the outhouses yards gardens orchards meadow pasture arable and all other lands thereunto belonging both freehold and copyhold with all and every [Illegible] and now in the tenure or occupation of Ann Pottrell Widow my daughter-in-law, unto Thomas Pottrell my son for and during the time of his natural life and after his decease my will and meaning is that the said messuage or tenement outhouses yards gardens orchards meadow pasture and all arrable and other lands free and copy as aforesaid shall remain unto my grandson Richard Pottrell the eldest son of my son Henry Pottrell deceased and to the heirs of the said Richard Pottrell for ever. Item I give and bequeath unto the said Richard Pottrell the sum of Twenty pounds of lawful money to be paid to him by my said executor within one year after my decease. Item I give and bequeath unto my three grand children Francis Henry and Thomas sons of my aforesaid son Henry Pottrell the sum of twenty pounds a peice to be paid to them by my said executor as they shall attain to their several ages of three and twenty years. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandchild Mary [Illegible] daughter of the said son Henry Pottrell the sum of five pounds to be paid to her by my said Executor when she shall come to the age of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first happen. Item I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Ann King ten pounds. Item I give unto my two daughters Mary King and Anne Pattin give five pounds a piece And my Will and meaning is that whereas my said son Thomas Pottrell oweth me thirty pounds of lawful money which I lately lent unto him that the said Thirty pounds shall be by him disposed of towards payment of the legacies by me herein bequeathed And if it shall happen that any of the siad legacies or any part thereof to be behind and not paid as by this my WIll is diverted that then it shall and may be lawful for such legacies or such person to whom the legacy so unpaid shall of right belong to enter in and upon the messuage and all and every the lands herein devised as aforesaid and take and receive the Rents and [Illegible] thereof until such legacy so unpaid shall be fully satisfied and paid with reasonable charges. And it is my will that my said son Thomas do keep the houses [Illegible] to him devised in good repairations and the lands in good heart and make no waste Lastly all the rest of my goods chattels and personal estate whatsoever after my debts and legacies paid and funeral discharged I give unto my said son Thomas Pottrell and I do hereby constitute and ordain and appoint my said son Thomas Pottrell sole executor of this my last will and testament. In witness where I said Henry Pottrell the testator to this my last Will and testament have set my hand and seal the day and year first above written. Signed sealed published and declared by the said Henry Pottrell the testator for his very last will and testament in the presence of William W Carter Richard Carter John Chamberlayn
